Chief Master Sergeant Retires






Chief Master Sergeant James H. Honeycutt, a native of Campbell County, will retire October 1, 2011, with over 40 years service from the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard. He will retire as the senior ranking Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force and also as the last remaining Air Force Airman in uniform from the Vietnam Campaign. He is a graduate of Jacksboro High School, class of 1970, where he lettered 4 years and was All State under football coach, Paul Gearing.
Chief Honeycutt is currently the Superintendent for the Directorate of Logistics for the Air National Guard, National Guard Bureau, NGB/A4, Joint Base at Andrews AFB, MD. He is responsible for all issues pertaining to the management of the Air National Guard enlisted staff assigned to the A4 Directorate.
Chief Honeycutt entered the United States Air Force in March 1971. He is a career aircraft maintainer. Chief Honeycutt has held key positions in aircraft maintenance organizations to include Avionics Branch Chief, MOS Superintendent, Maintenance Squadron Superintendent and Quality Assurance Superintendent. He has served in Strategic Air Command, Tactical Air Command, Mobility Air Command and United States Air Forces in Europe, as well as Headquarters United States Air Force. Chief Honeycutt also served as Lead Flight Chief, United States Military Training Mission, Saudi Arabia.
Some of Chief Honeycutt’s assignments have included Royal Air Force Base Upper Heyford, England (1973-1977), 366th TAC Fighter Wing, Mtn. Home AFB, ID (1977-1980), United States Training Mission to Saudi Arabia (1983-1988), 134th Air Refueling Wing, Knoxville, TN (1988-2005), and most recently, National Guard Bureau, Joint Base Andrews AFB, MD, Headquarters United States Air Force. Temporary assignments have included Thailand, Iran, Pakistan, Kosovo, United Arab Emirates, Australia, and Kuwait.
Chief Honeycutt also received multiple awards throughout his military career including the Meritorious Service Medal with three devices, Air Force Commendation Medal with two devices, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor with five devices, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with two devices, Air Reserves Forces Meritorious Service Medal with 5 devices, National Defense Service Medal with 2 devices, Vietnam Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal Ribbon with one device. Other notable achievements were NCO of the Year, 366th TAC Fighter Wing, Senior NCO of the Year, 134th Air Refueling Wing, the CMSgt Dick Red Award Winner for the ANG, and the Air Force Chief of Staff Team Excellence Award.
CMSgt Honeycutt now resides in Madisonville, TN. He is the son of the late Willie and Castene Honeycutt of Campbell County, Cherry Bottom community. He has two sons, Travis Honeycutt of Knoxville and Brad Honeycutt of Jacksboro.

  1. The Chief is one of the last, but not the last. SMSgt Larry Dunphy, 189th ANG at Little Rock AFB retires Dec 2011. He also holds the Vietnam Service medal. He may be the last? Thanks to both of them as well as all who have served.
